That's Que Harbor for ya. “I was looking to get 22 or 23 (minutes). I think it was top 20 or lower 21 time,” she said. “I haven’t been training like I should because I’ve been injured.” With an infectious laugh from the woman who has won the Freedom 5K, the annual race held in conjunction with Champaign-Urbana’s Independence Day celebration, several times added, “I’m not as young as I use to be. Age is catching up on me.” If age is indeed going to catch up with Harbor, he is going to need to run a lot faster if he is going to catch the energetic distance running coach and member of Champaign’s Mettler Center running team. She is staying well ahead of the affects of aging from pesky Father Time. In her younger days she said she would run two 5K races on the 4th of July but now she saves her energy for just one. She still wakes as early as 3am to get her miles in for the day maintaining a rigid training ritual. “My body’s old and I’m working two jobs now. I can’t do what I use to,” she said referring to running 5k races in 19 minutes or better. “But I would like to. I enjoy running.” She enjoys it enough to coach up and coming runners like Allan Hollingsworth of Monticello and fellow Rantoul resident Connor Millar. Both up and coming area distance runners who will become long-distance household names if she has her way. “They are great runners,” she says about her protégés. Last year, like in years past, Harbor won her age division at the race taking the title in the 55-59 year old with ease. “Now that I’ve gotten older, it is not about winning. It’s (about) coming out and seeing what I can do and watching all the great runners.” blog comments powered by Disqus |
